What to look for in a suppressor

There is no best suppressor, only the one that makes the right trades for your gun and how you shoot it. Here is what those trades actually are.

Every specification on a suppressor is in tension with the others. Quieter usually means bigger. Lighter usually means pricier and less heat tolerant. Lower backpressure usually means giving up a little sound. Nothing on the list below is free, which is why a spec sheet on its own tells you very little. What you are really choosing is which compromises you are willing to live with.

Start with the gun, not the suppressor

Before any performance number matters, two questions narrow the field more than everything else combined: what are you putting it on, and how many guns does it need to serve?

A suppressor's caliber rating is a ceiling, not a target. A .30 caliber model will happily shoot smaller bores, so one of them can cover a .308, a 6.5, a .300 BLK, and a 5.56 with the right mount. The trade is that a dedicated smaller-bore model is quieter and lighter on that specific host than a big-bore doing double duty. If it is only ever going on one rifle, buy for that rifle. If it is going to move around, buy for the largest thing you will feed it.

The mounting system is the decision that outlives the purchase. Direct thread is simple, light, and cheap, but slow to move between guns. Quick-detach systems cost weight and money and require a compatible muzzle device on every host, which adds up fast if you own five rifles. The HUB standard matters here because it is the escape hatch: a HUB-compatible suppressor takes mounts from many manufacturers, so you are buying into a threading standard rather than into one company's ecosystem.

Sound suppression, and why the numbers lie

This is what everyone shops for first, and it is the specification you should trust least as published. A single decibel figure means almost nothing without knowing where the microphone was, what ammunition was fired, what host it was on, and how the measurement was weighted. Two manufacturers can both print an honest number and be describing different quantities.

Independent measurement is worth more than a manufacturer's figure, because it applies one method across many products. Baffled does not display PEW Science ratings; it tells you which suppressors they have tested and links to the review, and it tags every data point with where it came from. Where a suppressor has been independently tested, go read the test. Where it has not, treat the manufacturer's figure as a claim rather than a measurement.

Compare like with like: A PEW Science Suppression Rating is not a decibel reading and cannot be compared to one. Ranking two suppressors by pulling one number from each of two different sources produces a confident-looking answer that means nothing.

Worth remembering too: the suppressor only addresses muzzle blast. If you are shooting supersonic ammunition, the bullet's crack is unaffected by anything hanging off the barrel, and on many rifles that crack is what you are left hearing.

Backpressure, and what it does to your gun

A suppressor traps gas that used to leave the muzzle, and that gas has to go somewhere. On a bolt gun, it mostly does not matter. On a gas-operated semi-automatic it matters a great deal, because the trapped gas pushes back down the barrel and through the action.

What you feel is gas at your face and in your eyes. What the gun feels is worse: an action cycling faster and harder than it was designed for, more fouling everywhere, and accelerated wear on parts that were sized for unsuppressed pressures. Low-backpressure designs, often marketed as flow-through, vent gas forward instead of recirculating it, and they typically give up a little sound performance to do it.

That trade is the single most consequential one on this list for anyone running a semi-automatic. If the gun is a range toy that gets a few hundred rounds a year, chase the sound number. If it is a rifle you shoot hard, the low-backpressure design that is two decibels louder may be the one you actually enjoy owning. An adjustable gas block is the other lever, and it is often cheaper than buying a different suppressor.

Weight, and where it sits

The number on the spec sheet undersells this, because the weight does not sit in your hands. It hangs at the far end of the barrel, where it acts as leverage against you. Sixteen ounces on the muzzle feels like considerably more than sixteen ounces in the stock, and the difference shows up first in offhand shooting and in how long you can hold a position.

Titanium buys most of the weight back and charges for it, and it tolerates sustained heat less well than stainless. Aluminum is lighter still and belongs on rimfire and some pistol hosts, where pressures stay low. Many designs mix materials, putting something heat-tolerant where the gas hits first and something light everywhere after.

Length, and the number that actually matters

Longer generally means quieter, because there is more room for gas to expand and cool. Longer also means more leverage, more to snag, and a rifle that handles worse in a truck or a blind. This is the most personal trade on the list, and it is worth being honest about how you actually shoot rather than how you imagine you will.

Overall length is not added length: A suppressor's overall length is not how much longer your rifle gets. Mounts nest inside the body, so part of that length sits over hardware already on your barrel. Baffled computes the net added length for a specific combination of parts, which is the number worth comparing.

Diameter, the one people forget

Diameter rarely makes the highlight reel and regularly ruins a purchase. A suppressor that will not clear your handguard is useless, and one that blocks your iron sights or crowds your optic's field of view is an irritation you notice every time you shoot. Barrel contour matters too, since a heavy profile eats into the clearance you thought you had.

Measure before you buy, not after. This is a cheap mistake to avoid and an expensive one to discover.

Flash signature

A suppressor gives unburned powder somewhere to finish burning before it reaches open air, so most of them cut visible flash substantially. That is worth real money at dawn and dusk, indoors, and any time you would like to see your own hit rather than a fireball.

It is also the hardest item on this list to shop for, because very few manufacturers publish anything measurable about it. Expect qualitative claims rather than numbers, and be skeptical of strong ones. Note also that this is separate from a flash hider on the muzzle, which is doing a different job at a different point in the system.

Durability, which is not glamorous

Three published specifications tell you whether a design will survive how you actually shoot:

  • Material. Stainless is tough and heavy. Titanium is light, expensive, and less heat tolerant. Inconel, Stellite, and similar superalloys show up where designs get abused, which is a signal in itself.
  • Full-auto rating. Even if you will never touch a machine gun, this is a useful proxy for how much heat and abuse a design tolerates, short-barreled hard use included.
  • Minimum barrel length. Short barrels send gas in at much higher pressure, so manufacturers publish floors, usually per caliber. The same model can be approved on a 16 inch 5.56 barrel and prohibited on a 10.3 inch one.

Check the minimum barrel length against the actual gun you are buying for, not just the caliber. It is the restriction most often discovered too late.

Whether you can take it apart

For centerfire rifles this barely matters. The gas runs hot enough that the inside stays reasonably clean on its own, and plenty of excellent designs are fully welded.

For rimfire it is close to mandatory. Rimfire ammunition is filthy and deposits lead, and a sealed rimfire suppressor will eventually turn into a solid object. If a .22 is anywhere in your plans, buy something you can disassemble.

Blank is not the same as sealed: Baffled marks a suppressor as user serviceable only where a manufacturer says so. An unmarked one has not been verified either way, so check the maker before assuming it is welded shut.

Point of impact, and getting it back

Hanging weight off your muzzle changes where the gun shoots. That is expected and easily handled if the suppressor lives on the rifle: mount it, then zero.

It matters more if you take it on and off, or move it between hosts, because then you care about repeatability. A good quick-detach system returns to the same place shot after shot. Direct thread is mechanically simple but slower, and it can shift slightly if it is not torqued consistently. If one suppressor is serving several rifles, repeatability moves up the list considerably.

What it actually costs

The price on the suppressor is not the bill. Budget for the mount, and for a compatible muzzle device on every host you plan to use it on, which is where a quick-detach system quietly becomes expensive across several rifles. There is also the federal transfer process, which takes time and paperwork regardless of what the suppressor cost.

It is worth pricing the whole setup before deciding that the more expensive suppressor is out of reach. Sometimes the cheaper one costs more by the time it is actually on a rifle.

Turning this into a shortlist

Most of the above is filterable. A reasonable order of operations: filter to what fits your host and your mounting plan first, since those are hard constraints. Then set your ceilings for length, weight, and diameter, because those are the ones you will feel every time you pick the rifle up. Whatever survives is a shortlist you can compare on sound with a clear conscience.
